I LOVE Stevie! When I started out I called my music "Mo-Hop" Motown - Hip Hop!
I have Songs In The Key Of Life on vinyl and DJ Sir Duke and I Wish. I covered Master Blaster (Jammin') on tour (& played the bongos!) and one of my favorite live shows of all time was seeing Stevie at the Hollywood Bowl!
As an emotionally connected person, to the surprise of my daughter and son I actually cried spontaneous happy tears while playing them Stevie's 'Happy Birthday' song on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I was suddenly overcome as I explained how Stevie wrote the song and campaigned for a national holiday to honor MLK's life and work :)
SO AMAZING... Especially remembering and reflecting on MLK's values of equality, love and nonviolence.
FUN STEVIE TRIVIA : When I was starting out I'd made some demos including my song Finally Woken (which would later become the name of my debut album), and I asked a friends Mum to help me write a letter in braille which I sent to Stevie asking him if he'd consider producing my first album!
I didn't get a response but randomly I always remembered the name I found online that I sent the Fedex tube to. A million years later I was with the Dave Matthews Band in LA who were being honored with a NAACP Award, and backstage my A&R told me Stevie was in the room next door!! I went to stand outside the door, I didn't even need to meet him I was just so happy to be that close :) Lo and behold, also standing outside in a sharp suit was his brother, I told him the braille letter story and joked I'd not got a response and the name I'd sent it to, and it turned out it was HIM!! HE was the person I mailed it to!! SO CRAZY! He didn't remember it obviously, but introduced me to Stevie on his way to stage :)
Later, Stevie also kindly approved another of my favorite songs You And I to appear on the Official 9/11 'Ten Years On' Anniversary Album I produced.
